Internet of Things, connected devices, edge computing, and industrial IoT
The Connectivity Standards Alliance launched Matter 1.6 with standardized multi-admin networking, allowing corporate facilities, landlords, and security integrators to share device control without duplicate hardware.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology is establishing a quantum manufacturing center with $20 million in initial funding, plus parallel $20 million pilots for aerospace additive manufacturing and critical minerals. U.S. manufacturers face new compliance and funding alignment decisions.
U.S., German, and Canadian authorities dismantled four IoT botnets controlling over 3 million routers and cameras with record 20+ Tbps attack capacity. Enterprises must now budget for network segmentation and IoT asset discovery as Tbps-grade attacks from commodity hardware become a proven risk.
Three vendors shipped edge-specific capabilities for industrial operations this week, adding standards-based alarm management and real-time forecasting to reduce cloud dependency and integration costs.
New market data shows enterprise IoT analytics and digital twin spending will double from $404M in 2026 to $775M by 2031, while 82% of organizations prioritize real-time processing capabilities.
Satellite connectivity is now standardized inside cellular IoT modules via 3GPP NTN, eliminating proprietary hardware. SGP.32 eSIM commercialization shifts value to orchestration platforms.
Siemens launched Intelligence Center X, an industrial AI platform built with Databricks and FFT, as global IIoT spending heads toward $847B by 2033. The move intensifies competition with Rockwell, Schneider, and ABB for integrated OT/IT stacks.
The acquisition collapses two previously separate budgets—OT security and IoT device management—into one platform. Enterprises should expect vendors to pitch integrated control and tighter lock-in.
PTC's divestiture of ThingWorx and Kepware to private equity marks the sixth major industrial IoT platform ownership change in 24 months. Enterprise buyers face new vendor risk as platform sunset rates accelerate.
New survey data shows real-time analytics has become the top priority for enterprise IoT, while a separate report warns that vendors offering only dashboards face disintermediation as buyers shift budgets toward autonomous operations.
Soracom's commercial SGP.32 deployment lets enterprises ship one hardware SKU globally and assign operator profiles remotely, reducing SKU costs and carrier dependency.
The machine-data standard now covers 400+ companies, cutting integration costs and raising lifecycle risk for closed systems as AI spending hits $65 billion.
